Why Data Is King When Studying Horse Form

Why Data Is King When Studying Horse Form
My good friend Eric Winner (no, that's not his real surname) has always loved research. In fact, I often think he enjoys finding new angles more than he does making money. He just loves the pursuit of knowledge too much. Well, that's my observation.

He once told me he had discovered The Millionaire Betting System. He wouldn't tell me how it worked! I wrote a post on one of my websites detailing how uber money would find him love, brand new Ferrari, and a Monte Carlo lifestyle.

Livin' la Vida Loca at Jaywick Sands.

Unfortunately, later, he told me is didn't work.

It happened the same time I was considering an Irish Free Bet, something he would have been better spending his time. However, I do like Eric's approach because he simply doesn't stop when it comes to digging up knowledge. Gems of wisdom. If anyone can find the gold, a rare black opal or next week's winning lottery number he can do it. OK, he can't find the lottery numbers. Perhaps that was his millionaire system.

He makes me smile because he is a very sarcastic person. If he can take the mickey out of you he will. Mercilessly. And it's often the case with people he feels don't quite measure up when it comes to their gambling. It often relates to putting in the groundwork rather than looking at the form of a horse in the Racing Post. Because it only shows the last three runs. He once asked someone: 'How do you make your tip selections?'

The bloke said: 'Like everyone else!'

Eric, no relation to Michael Winner, was amused by this because he took it as proof the person had little to no idea about anything.

Which he kind of enjoyed.

I do agree data is king. It isn't the answer to every question but it definitely helps draw the line between some hope and no hope. I think we all need to know where that line sits because it makes sense.

For example, with horse racing, some trainers simply don't win at big odds. Perhaps they are a gambling stable or people following them are on the ball. Who knows? It doesn't matter, as we are dealing with 'facts' as far as we can know. The thing about statistics is they can be viewed from many different angles. To be fair, looking at them from a very simple understanding is probably a winning idea.

I am into research and learning. A gambler with any hope of winning needs to be steadfast. No business can rest on its laurels. Those who don't continue to work to improve will soon be outdated.

The approach to success is very similar across different disciplines from gambling, business and even sports.

It's hardly surprising.

It's similar to following the scientific method; it can be used for any research.

The next time you meet someone called Eric. Stop and think for a moment what you say. Because if his surname is Winner or he says: 'I thought I'd found the millionaire betting system' then you may be greatly criticised.

Don't say anything without much thought, data research and analysis.
